WALKING TOUR OF ST. NICHOLAS CREEK BURIAL GROUND AND SERENITY FARM
The Farm Heritage Conservancy is sponsoring a new walking history tour of Serenity Farm, Benedict, Maryland. This tour focuses on the African American history at the site, but also includes a broad overview of the people who have lived there, starting with the Piscataways, 13,000 years ago.
The tour is offered on multiple dates:
Sept. 26, Oct. 3 and Nov. 1, 2026
Please register for the date you’d like to attend so we may have an accurate headcount. Tours are capped at 20 people each. Walking shoes or boots and weather appropriate outerwear are recommended. Tours will be canceled in the event of heavy rain, but may still go on in light rain. If canceled, they will not be rescheduled, but you are encouraged to register for a later tour if possible. If in doubt, please check this page for any updates, or call 301-399-1634. Tour lasts about 1.5-2 hours and cover about 2.25 miles. It is an easy to moderate walk, mostly on flat terrain, with a few shallow hills. There will be two restroom stops in the first half of the tour, but none in the second half. There is no food sold on site, but you are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to eat before or after the tour. We will not break for lunch during the tour. We hope you will join us for this unique combination of important local history and beautiful scenery, all on a healthy hike! Tours begin at the Harvest House, Serenity Farm, at noon. Duration of the tour is about 2 hours.

REMEMBERED BY THE WIND
In 2012, a massive storm roared across the United States from Iowa to the Chesapeake Bay leaving a swath of destruction. On Serenity Farm, the storm uprooted an enormous Oak tree leaving a massive hole -- resulting in an archaeological discovery and the beginning of a forensic quest by the farm owners, a team of experts, and the local African American community.
